Today (3 November), at the FIA’s headquarters in Paris, France, the members of the World Motor Sport Council met ahead of this year’s FIA General Assembly week. The following decisions were taken:

RALLYING

From January 2011 a new Group R4 category will be created. A kit, homologated by the manufacturers of current Group N cars, will be made available for these 2-litre turbo Group N cars to ensure they can remain competitive with the Super 2000 cars.

To increase competition and the spectacle in all FIA Rally Championship events, the WMSC has agreed to the principle of studying technical regulations which may potentially permit GT cars to compete in these events.

Japanese manufacturers Subaru and Mitsubishi are both developing high performance versions of their existing Group N cars to enable them to compete on level terms with their Super 2000 rivals next year.

Work on the cars, based on the firms Impreza and Lancer models, began earlier this month after the FIA World Motor Sport Council gave the green light to a new ‘R4’specification.

An R4 kit, homologated by the current Group N manufacturers, should enhance the performance of the two-litre turbo cars, bringing them in line with the normally aspirated Super 2000s.

The R4 class could lead to Imprezas and Lancers competing alongside Super 2000 cars in the 2011 SWRC, and should also give the turbo cars a boost in national rallies where they already compete in the same category as the S2000s.

Details of the kit are yet to be finalised by the FIA, but next year’s R4s are expected to be stronger and lighter than the existing N4 models, with longer suspension travel and modifications to steering columns, dashboards and windows. Further power could be unlocked by widening the mandatory 33mm turbo restrictor.

Production car World Rally Champion Armindo Araujo gave a glimpse of the R4s potential when he drove a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X R4 prototype at last week’s Monza Rally Show in Italy. His times were consistently in the top two or three of the S2000 class and he rounded off the event by beating all the S2000 cars to win the final stage of the event.

Official Mitsubishi R4 kit homologated and into production

MML Sports Ltd has confirmed that the official Mitsubishi kit of components to convert Group N Mitsubishi Lancer EvolutionX rally cars into the new international specification, R4, has now been homologated by the FIA. Following confirmation of its successful homologation, MML Sports, charged by Mitsubishi Motor Company and working in partnership with Ralliart Italy, will begin large scale production of the components to satisfy demand for the new breed of rally cars.

KAPS Transmissions releases R4 Subaru STI Sequential Gearbox!


The worldwide rally community has been sent abuzz following the news that world renowned gearbox manufacturer KAPS Transmissions, is releasing for sale, its newest R4 Subaru STI Sequential Gearbox.

Following months of development and testing plus continued discussions with FIA representatives and delegates from Subaru STI Japan, the wraps have come off the most anticipated projects in recent history for a subject that has been a hot topic over the past 18 months.

As the racing world changes with the introduction of a new rally class R4 in 2011, KAPS Transmissions was the first to respond with a sequential gearbox that will suit the demands of the category for years to come.

The gearbox also has a wide race appeal outside of rally and is available in a range of different ratios. These ratios are designed specifically to cater for professionals competing in circuit, drag, hill climb, rally cross or even time attack.

With a quickest shift speed of between 40-50 milliseconds, torque rating of 800NM and the weight saving from a standard STI 6 speed gearbox of 10.5 kilos, there is no other gearbox on the market for Subaru to rival those numbers.
